Brna

Four kilometres south-west from the town of Smokvica,
on the south of the island of Korčula, there is the locality of Brna,
situated in the very beautiful Bay of Brna. The peninsula Mali Zaglav,
separates the Bay of Brna from the Istruga Bay on the west side,
whereas on the south-east direction, towards the village of Zavalatica,

there are numerous small beaches with a crystal blue sea,
surrounded by evergreen forests.

In the 19th century, the Bay of Brna was used as the port from
which the wines
of Smokvica were exported to the Adriatic and Mediterranean
ports and that was the main reason of settlement in the respective area.

According to some sources,
the name of the town derives from the Latin word “taberna” meaning a shipyard.

A beautiful and well-protected location enabled
the town of fishermen to develop into a tourist destination,
thus in 1971 the Hotel Feral was built and it is still in use.
Besides the hotel , which was redecorated as to
accommodate 180 more guests, there are many nicely
built houses which partake in the tourist offer

At the same time while Brna was turning into a tourist settlement,
in the neighbouring Bay of Istruga a sport recreational
centre with two tennis courts, a boce ball field,
ping pong tables and a beach volleyball playing area, was being developed.
The sport centre comprises an open-air restaurant with
a dance floor on the terrace which offers many food specialities.
The Bay of Istruga is 500 metres long and 150 metres wide
and up to the middle of the bay there is a pile of curative mud.
This kind of mud is very hygienic and is of a good quality
and this could be the key to curative tourism of the area.
The whole area is surrounded by evergreen forests and
Mediterranean vegetation which could help people suffering from asthma.
